About

Village of New Square

New Square is an incorporated village in the Town of Ramapo, Rockland County, New York, covering approximately 237 acres (0.37 square miles). Incorporated on November 6, 1961, New Square was the fifth village to incorporate among what are now twelve incorporated villages within the Town of Ramapo — following Suffern, Hillburn, Spring Valley, and Sloatsburg.

Our Founding

New Square's origins trace back to 1954, when the Zemach David Corporation purchased a 130-acre dairy farm near Spring Valley, laying the groundwork for what would grow into a thriving residential community. Construction began in 1956, and the first families took residence that December. The village takes its name from Skvyra, a town in Ukraine that was the historical home of the community's founders — a heritage it carries with pride as a cornerstone of its identity.

Community & Culture

New Square was founded under the guidance of the late Grand Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Twersky, who led the community until his passing in 1968. Today, the community is led in matters of faith by his only son, Grand Rabbi David Twersky. The Village is a close and caring community where residents share a deep commitment to faith, family, and tradition, and where a common language and shared customs bind neighbors together across generations. Members of the community pursue meaningful occupations as students, educators, tradespeople, entrepreneurs, and skilled professionals, contributing to the vitality of the local economy and the broader Rockland County region. The village also features its own shopping centers, serving residents' everyday needs in a convenient, community-centered setting.

Growth & Population

New Square has grown steadily into a well-established and vibrant community. As of the U.S. Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 population estimate (V2025), the village is home to 10,214 residents. New Square also has one of the youngest populations in the United States, with a median age of approximately 15.7 years — a reflection of the large, multigenerational families that are central to the community's way of life, and a defining characteristic that continues to shape the village's priorities around schools, parks, sidewalks, and family-oriented infrastructure.

Governance

The village operates under its own local government, currently led by Mayor Israel Spitzer together with a Board of Trustees, ensuring that the needs and character of the community are well represented and thoughtfully maintained. New Square also maintains its own zoning and building codes, established following incorporation, which have guided the orderly and thoughtful development of the village over the years. Residential housing throughout the village is designed to accommodate families and support the multigenerational lifestyle that is central to the community's values.

A Proud Chapter in Rockland County's Story

From a 130-acre dairy farm in 1954 to a flourishing village of over ten thousand residents today, New Square's history reflects what a determined, values-driven community can build together. As the village continues to grow, its commitment to faith, family, and tradition remains the foundation on which its future is built.
