Office Of The Mayor

Overview

The Office of the Mayor provides executive leadership for New Square Village, presiding over the Board of Trustees and overseeing the implementation of local laws and policies. The Mayor works closely with village departments to ensure efficient services, sound fiscal management, and effective public safety operations. Israel (Izzy) Spitzer serves as Mayor and presides over the Village's Board of Trustees. He works closely with village departments and outside agencies to advance infrastructure, public safety, and community services, and represents New Square in ongoing coordination with county, state, and federal government partners.

Mayor Spitzer has served in New Square Village government since 1998, when he joined the Board of Trustees and was appointed Deputy Mayor. Following the passing of longtime Mayor Mates Friesel — one of the longest-serving mayors in the United States, having led the Village since its 1961 incorporation — Spitzer was appointed Acting Mayor by the Board of Trustees in 2015. He was elected Mayor in 2016 and has been re-elected in every election since.
